On Sunday night just before halftime of the Super Bowl, York firefighters with mutual assistance from Caledonia for a Ladder and East Avon as the FAST were alerted to a farm on Stewart Rd. for a commercial building fire. The first arriving York Chief declared a working fire and requested a 2nd Alarm, bringing in many additional resources from the area.
East Avon firefighters from Engine 274 (Sackett Rd.) arrived and stretched a master-stream monitor off of York’s Engine to assist their members with fire attack. Quad 276’s crew (Rt. 15) arrived along with Pavilion’s Tanker and both crews assisted Caledonia’s crew with a large rural water supply operation and interior attack on the rear side of the building. EAFD split crews to provide a FAST, stretch an additional ground monitor to provide an interior attack at the front of the structure, and provided an officer to act as the Water Supply Officer for the duration incident.
Firefighters faced many challenges, most notably the sub-zero temperatures at the time of the fire, causing many issues. Lima firefighters were on hand to cover our district while we spent the night/early morning hours in York and as our apparatus spent much of Monday thawing out.
